As the world anxiously awaits Nov. 5 to know who will be the next U.S. president, Hoboken is awaiting the same day to learn the future of rent control in the city.
The citywide referendum to amend the rent control ordinance has generated high energy from dueling campaigns. One calls this a fight to preserve rent control while the other dismisses the value of the 40-year-old ordinance, instead urging voters to focus almost exclusively on city-funded affordable housing.
