SPRINGFIELD — About 100 years ago, a Jewish doctor could not send his patient to a local hospital. If needed, he would find a gentile physician to admit the patient. Antisemitism was rife among the profession, and Jewish doctors were considered second or third-class workers.
That was when a group of Jewish physicians got together to form the Doctors’ Club, later called the Maimonides Medical Club, after the 12th century Sephardic rabbi and philosopher Mose ben Maimon.
