FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The Bruins hadn’t trimmed their roster all the way to the NHL maximum 23 when they practiced for the final time before Tuesday’s 8 p.m. opener at Florida at War Memorial Arena in Fort Lauderdale.

Teams need to have rosters set by 5 p.m. on Monday.

    Jim Montgomery offered few updates.

Matt Poitras practiced in a non-contact jersey, but won’t play Tuesday. He’s still officially day-to-day with an undisclosed injury,. Defenseman Ian Mitchell was one of eight defenseman on the ice. He’s was also in a non-contact jersey. A puck, however, ignored the maroon jersey and hit Mitchell in the face. He left practice early, but not before leaving a smattering of blood.

Tyler Johnson wasn’t on the ice. The veteran forward is on a professional tryout agreement and would have to be signed to a regular contract to be on the 23-man roster. Players on PTOs often have to wait for other contracts and salary cap moves to be sorted out before they’re signed.

“He’s not with the team,” Montgomery said without further elaboration.

Poitras and Johnson both spent a lot of training camp centering the third line. Without both of them, Trent Frederic moved to the middle with Max Jones and Justin Brazeau. Cole Koepke skated with the fourth line. Riley Tufte, who is a candidate to be waived, was on the ice as well.
